Lustre 2.6 Update

Just started testing 2.5.54 tag 14 "blocker" bugs, all in progress LFSCK2 continues on track

Cory asked about where we left testing, and the idea of release colateral. Chris mentioned the release plan. We noted the need to get that plan up on the OpenSFS wiki.

Chris brought up a previously discussed issue, that we want to complete all of the work assigned to a release, not just the bugs marked blocker.

Jodi pointed out that the blockers are more of a focus until the feature freeze, at which point there is expected to be time to address some of lower severity level tickets.

Chris noted that there are over 100 bugs targeted for 2.6, and we won't get to them all. We need to triage and get the list down to a more realistic list. Jodi agree.

Discussion ensued about how to do that (no on wants to go through 100+ bugs one-by-one on the phone call). The plan was for everyone to look at the list and pick their most important issues and send that list to the CDWG mailing list. We can aggregate those lists and trim until we have a reasonable amount of work. Then we can reserve the phone call for dicussing any tickets where there is need for more debate about relative priority.

It was suggested that we add "Bug Triage" as an agenda item for some calls as well to motivate folks.

Open Discussion

Cray noted they are having a lot of issues with testing Lustre 2.5.

2.4.2 has been released and focus has switch to the 2.5 branch.

RHEL 6.5 (server and client) targeted for Lustre 2.5.1, but only if ready in time for the release. (The release is not planned to be held up for RHEL 6.5 support).

Cray planning to move to 2.6. Chris asked about the thinking behind that plan. The answer was a combination of customer pressure to stay recent, and because the community is always focused on master, feature releases have improved significantly (which makes using a non-maintenace branch release more feasible). They are feeling more confident about adopting releases on master. Also interested in LFSCK2.

Cory - Interested in improving test plans for future releases. Would like to raise the bar. Maybe around LUG time make a push on testing.

There was also a discussion about need for addressing the documentation problems in Lustre. It started about the manual's problems, but continued into the lack of internals documentation. Cory suggested that the CDWG propose to the Board that we put out RFPs for documentation work.

Action Items

  • Put the 2.6 testing plan document up on the OpenSFS wiki (Jodi)
  • Work on RFPs for Lustre documentation work (internals, manuals, etc.) (Chris)
