Minutes

Expanding the Lustre Development Community

This discussion was initiated at the request of the Board of Directors. Most on the call expressed puzzlement as to the how this could be achieved.

Cory raised a commonly discussed issue: the barriers to entry for new Lustre software developers are quite high. For instance,

  • Protocols are not documented
  • Code is pooly documented
  • Code is complicated and difficult to comprehend
  • Technical debt abounds

Little of OpenSFS's budget and efforts are currently going towards addressing these problems.

It was suggested that the the Marketing Working Group might have a role in increasing the number of organizations that commit software developers to Lustre efforts.

It was suggested that a plan to increase the Lustre developer pool should include plans for Lustre internals training.

Linux 3.11 udpate

3.11 client support starting to land, only three commits left to land LU-3974

LFSCK2

LFSCK2 work - 7 out of 25 landed, and rest are under review. On track for 2.6.

LU-4359

ORNL is moving to 2.4 - need to transfer data from old to new filesystem from 1.8

LU-4359 has caused lots of heartburn (possibly LU-793 related)

b2_5 status

Cory queried about lack of landings on b2_5. Intel holding off on b2_5 landings until 2.4.2 finished to avoid overloading the test system. 2.4.2 should be finished in near future and b2_5 landings will then commence.
